Sonic Body is an hour-long interactive installation performance. Conceived by choreographer Adrienne Hart (Artistic Director of Neon Dance) and the award winning artist-researcher Dr Ana Rajcevic (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Sonic Body transforms gesture into vibration and sound through a series of wearable, sonic prosthetics inspired by the structural mechanics of spider webs.
Funded by Arts Council England, the project is inspired by the visionary artist/architect duo Arakawa (1936-2010) and Madeline Gins (1941-2014) who focused in their later careers on ‘procedural architecture’, using specially designed built environments to actively engage with and challenge the body. Together, they fostered an ongoing process of learning, adaptation, and enhanced perception, with the aim of revolutionising the way in which people perceive and interact with their surroundings.
Sonic Body features hundreds of conductive golden threads, 1-6 metres long, that connect to floor, ceiling, wall and performer. Each individual thread responds to human touch by releasing sound composed by Sebastian Reynolds in collaboration with acclaimed Japanese vocal performer Hatis Notis. Each thread can detect the pressure of the touch, creating sound that is expressive and intimately linked to the user's body. Sonic Body is a work for a solo performerwho explores this sonic architecture; weaving audiences into their environment over the duration of the performance.
Sonic Body can function as a stand alone interactive installation work and live performance, and is due to premiere in Autumn 2027.
